To kill a mockingbird -x (Click to select text)
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD This novel tells the story of a young girl and her good and bad times. The story goes through the summer when the girl was just six and carries on till a year later in the fall. The narrator is, Jean Louise Finch also known as Scout, and recalls the events leading up to Jem Finch breaking his arm. To Kill A Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee and copyrighted in 1960. To kill a Mockingbird was Lee's first and last novel. After winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1960, Lee never wrote another novel. Lee was told to lengthen the short story to make it a novel by a literary agent in New York and apparently it was a good idea. This novel was probably set in the time it was being written. Probably around the mid 50's in a small southern town that goes by the name of Maycomb, Alabama. This was a time when there was a lot of racial tension, with colored drinking fountain, and restrooms. Basically segregation was everywhere. The novel begins when Scout recalls when her brother broke his arm. Then the entire novel consists of Scout recalling the events leading up to her brother breaking his arm. As it was said above the events begin in the summer when Scout is just six years old. She and a friend named Dill try to invent ways to lure a mysterious neighbor, whom they have never seen, to come out of his house. Then when summer is over Scout begins her first year of school. She then recalls he hard times at school. Ultimately summer comes and Scout, Dill, and Jem continue their scheme for attempting to encounter Boo Radley, the mysterious neighbor. In the upcoming fall the children learn that their father, atticus, is being called a "n**ger lover" by the people living in Maycomb for defending a colored man named Tom Robinson. Mr. Robinson is being accused of attacking Mayella Ewell. The verdict at the trial enrages the Ewell family. After the trial on the way home after a Holloween party, Jem and Scout are attacked and this is where Jem suffers the broken arm and Scout luckily for the thickness of his costume is saved from being stabbed. In the recovery room, Scout realizes that Boo had carried them to safety and saved their lives. After that incident Scout and Boo become good friends. The theme of this story is that if you get to know someone you will find that they are usually kinder then you assume. The theme of this book is givin by Scout and Boo Radley. In the beginning scout does not know Radley, so she assumes that he is an evil, dark figure who never leaves his home. Then once she gets to know him she sees that in reality he is a kind-hearted man. It is very impressive the way that Harper Lee focused on Boo Radley while expressing other ideas as well. Throughout the story the situation Boo Radley stays the chief point in the story. This is a great novel for a person who enjoys a story with a good theme. It emphasizes the basic value of not judging a book by its cover or in other words not judging a man by the color of his skin. This theme is expressed even in the title. Atticus gives the kids air rifles for Christmas, and tells them not to kill a mockingbird because it never did any harm to them. If you want to read a book of fiction about how life really was back in the day of segregation in the United States this is the book for you.
